During a recent cruise, our ship visited the enchanting city of Bergen, Norway. That evening I found myself immersed in a conversation with a fellow passenger about our adventures in this picturesque city that day. As we chatted, she mentioned that she was traveling with a friend and that they had taken a ride on the Funicular up to Mt. Fløyen to relish the breathtaking views.
I couldn’t contain my excitement and chimed in, “We did that too! And weren’t the goats absolutely wonderful?” To my surprise, she looked puzzled and asked, “What goats?” Eagerly, I talked about the goats that were situated down a path in front of the old restaurant on Mt. Fløyen. Her eyes widened, and she exclaimed, “We explored everywhere, and there were no goats! We even went to the cafe! “I quickly clarified, “Oh, not the cafe! Down the sidewalk, in front of the large building which is the old restaurant they are renovating, the goats were in that area right on the sidewalk, and their little barn is over there.”
With enthusiasm, I, along with a travel companion, shared photos of our delightful goat encounter. Her response was a mixture of disbelief and regret. “No way! I can’t believe it. My friend has a list of places to visit at each port, and we rush from one spot to the next, take a few pictures, and move on. Now I’m feeling a little upset. It’s all becoming a blur.”
This story carries an essential lesson for all travelers: cherish the moments. It’s so easy to become consumed with the quest for social media-worthy picture, but it’s vital not to forget to immerse yourself in the present moment. Instead of allowing your journey to become a hasty blur of collecting as many social media posts as possible, let it be a vivid and memorable experience that will last a lifetime.
